His father John Fury had competed professionally in the 1980s. In April 2012 Fury traveled to Belfast to fight for the Irish Heavyweight title. Tyson first made his professional debut at the age of 20 in 2008 fighting the Hungarian Bela Gyongyosi.

In 2011 Fury took on the undefeated heavyweight Dereck Chisora for the British and Commonwealth heavyweight titles at Wembley. Chisora was the favorite to win but Fury won. Fury was making a serious steady rise to becoming one of the boxing world’s greats. In 2015 Fury defeated Wladimir Klitschko and became the WBA, IBF and WBO heavyweight champion.
Fury was the first boxer to defeat Klitschko in 11 years. That same year there was controversy over Fury’s name appearing on the shortlist for sports personality of the year over homophobic and sexist remarks. In 2016 Fury took a break from boxing due to mental health issues, and drug and alcohol misuse. Following an emotional statement, Fury took it upon himself to vacate his heavyweight titles. At his lowest point Fury even thought of taking his own life. He returned to boxing in June 2018 and claimed it was boxing that brought him back from the brink.
